A cyclist on his way home said he could not believe his eyes when he looked into the boot of a car - and saw a tiger staring back.
Adam Dobbey said he was shocked to see the big cat travelling in the back of an estate car.
Mr Dobbey, a teaching assistant at Bideford College, was cycling home to Appledore when he saw the bizarre sight last Friday.
He said: "I was approaching Heywood roundabout from Bideford and I noticed a big cat in a white estate car, like a Volvo, in front of me.
"It was lying in the back and I thought it looked like a tiger. I did a double-take and looked again - to make sure - and its head was moving.
"Its head was pretty big and up at the window. It took a while to sink in - but it was definitely a tiger."
The father-of-four said the car, which did not seem to have a cage, turned left at the roundabout and drove off towards Bude.
Mr Dobbey was too stunned to get the registration number of the car, but his wife, Mandy, later rang wildlife parks and tried to find out where the tiger might have come from.
After finding no leads, the couple thought it must have been a pet and contacted the police to make them aware of the sighting.
Mr Dobbey said: "It is very strange, and we didn't know what to do in this sort of situation. You don't know if people are going to take you seriously.
"But I am convinced that is what I saw - it looked like a tiger and it was moving."
Bideford police confirmed that they had been told about the sighting, but said they were not taking any further action.
